About London Time Bank
There are lots of ways for you to give your time in London – but there’s only one where you actually get that time back!
London Time Bank is the capital wide network of community time banks. Currently there are over 20 community time banks in London – from Peckham to Bromley to Archway. Community time banks work using time as a currency. Time bank participants earn time credits for sharing their skills in their local community – skills such as letter writing, befriending, English lessons, DIY – whatever brings people together. Time bank participants “earn” one time credit for every hour spent helping someone else. Those time credits can then be “spent” on getting help and support back when needed. The Time Broker, who co-ordinates the community time bank, links participants up and keeps a record of the exchanges made. By valuing everyone’s contributions equally no-ones skills go to waste – time banking recognises that we all have something of value to give. Everyone is a giver and receiver – making it different to traditional volunteering. Which is why it appeals to such a wide range of people, many of who would not normally get involved in volunteering. Time banks are helping to develop a sense of community where it has been lost and break down barriers by basing involvement on what people can do, rather than what they can’t. London Time Bank is part of a national network of time banks - Time Banks UK
